The origin of this ambiguous symbol is quite obscure. When Saruman created the first Uruk, the orc enraged him, so Saruman gave him a shove to the head. As it happened, his hand was covered in chalk. The orc took the print for a badge of honour, and so, the hand stuck, whether Saruman liked it or not.

Legolas loved himself very much. And he wanted to show it. But society encourages modesty and discourages arrogance. Little is it known that Lord of the White Tree is one of Legolas' titles.
