I'll take a risk on 4 points and say never, since Gandalf never really had a clear plan for the defeat of Smaug.

Sorry, Saucepan... it is specifically stated that at some point Thorin did decide to listen to Gandalf.

For 4 points, it was at the Unexpected Party in Bag End, when Gandalf revealed the map of Erebor showing the secret passage and the key to the passage.

But I still maintain that Gandalf had no specific plan for the defeat of Smaug.
