I know what the books say Hobbits are. I had a very clear picture a few weeks ago. Then during a project for school, I stumbled upon an article from the 50's when the first book came out. It gave a brief summary of the story.
One thing puzzled me though...it said Hobbits were shorter versions of Elves. I always thought they were short versions of Men with pointy-{ish} ears. Can someone clarify please? |

According to his own letters, Tolkien used to get rather frustrated with what critics and reviewers and illustrators assumed hobbits to be. Your initial assumption is correct.
Half the time, the reviewers and some of the illustrators don't seem to have read the books.

well, i would imagine that hobbits are smaller versions of humans with pointy(ish)ears. i dont want to get complicated here, but wouldnt anyone suppose, if they were smaller versions of elves, they would live eternally too? just a thought

Hobbits are a combination of humans, dwarves and elves. They were developed by the little known Vala, Töbáccëànyä Kementári, twin sister of Yavanna.
Humans for their speech, family habits, and generalities. Dwarves for their love of food and mead, height, hairyness, resistance to magic, and propensity to live in holes in the ground. Elves for their long fingers, ears, stealthiness of footstep, love of song, love of the land, and gift-giving. Dwarves and Common men together for their middling life-span. I hope that clears things up for everybody. [ March 16, 2003: Message edited by: Tar-Palantir ]

Does it say anywhere in the books that hobbits had pointed ears. I know they do in the movies but is it mentioned in the books.
Hobbits were a branch of men who became short, probably in a similar way to how petty dwarves became shorter than other dwarves. It would have been due to a combination of genetics and environment. The gene for shortness being favoured due to an environmental condition and over time they became as they were in the books.

Tar-Palantir, thank you for that very, ummm - interesting... explanation! I would love to hear your reference for Yavanna's twin - some obscure HoME volume that I haven't seen, obviously!
