Frodo and Bilbos Birthday?!?!? - The Barrow-Downs Discussion Forum

In the Fellowship of the Ring it states that Frodo and Bilbo have the same Birthday and celebrate it together every year.Well in the book there is a small statment made during the party about it being Frodos Birthday.But in the movie it is specifically Bilbos Birthday and not one thing would ever lead you to believe that it was Frodos.Why would that happen?

He seemed a lot younger in the films so maybe he wasn't turning 33 just then so it was less important? Maybe they just forgot... Either way, I feel bad for poor Frodo; no birthday party and he ended up being saddled with the doom of Middle-earth as a gift! And not a complaint out of him...

Good point it was his 33rd too - which mean't he had come of age too so its like they overlooked his 18th or 21st or something! I guess they thought it was all too much for the simple movie-going public to take in!

Well, he did get Bag-end, which if you ask Lobelia is prime Hobbiton property.

But how rude of not even putting his name on the banner!It only said "Happy Birthday Bilbo Baggins"!And J.R.R Tolkien even made it a big thing in the book.Thats partly why they moved in together!

Very good point.But even in the book there isnt that big of a deal made out of it!But Bilbo still made a point that it was his Birthday!My poor Frody Wody!

It probably wasn't really too big a deal for Frodo to turn 33; that happens all the time. But honestly, how often do you see a hobbit turn 111? Frodo didn't even make much of a big deal out of it. He probably wasn't too overly-concerned with his birthday; he might have even forgotten. (I forgot it was my birthday when I turned 18; no one even threw a party for me because I forgot to tell them. Didn't realize I was eighteen until the next day...) [img]smilies/biggrin.gif[/img]

yes, turning 33 was important. Frodo was "of-age" now. he was past the irresponsible "tweens" and had graduated to being an adult hobbit.

When Bilbo dissapeared wasnt there supposed to be some kind of flashing light or something?

True, true. I'm too used to American ways where there is no defined coming of age. (I was especially out of the loop since I never got a driver's license at age 16 and forgot my own 18th birthday. What's going to happen when I turn 21? I hate alcohol!) I always forget that other cultures do put great significance on coming of age.

And yes, in the book Gandalf had a little fireworks display to help hide Bilbo. And he knew all about Bilbo's plan to use the ring that way; in the movie, he seemed pretty angriy surprised.

Well i guess the producers and other people who made the movie probley didn't really think that Frodo turning 33 was a big deal(even though it was). And it seems that Frodo is that type of Hobbit who dosn't want to draw alot of attention to him self, and he probley felt that Bilbo deserved the atetion more than him. And Frodo has probley had his share of attention getting brthday parties.

In the book the combined birthdays were used to introduce some of the main characters, as well as some interesting background about Hobbit "culture". It does not really have any effect on the plot, though.

In a movie, you are relying more on visual images to get across the the point of the story. (Ever sat through a bad movie that relied on an lot of exposition to explain what's going on?)

The scene was fine as Jackson did it. Colorful, fun, and a great introduction of the main characters and hobbits in general.

Yes, I've sat through a million of those movies!

Its just that in the begging of th efirst book they made a big thing out of it saying how that was partly why they moved in together.
