1420! Tolkien's Anniversary

I don't know if anyone realised, but on Wednesday 22nd, it will be exactly 90 years since Tolkien married Edith - a date that was also on a Wednesday!

Time for a toast on that day, methinks. A perfect excuse for a celebration!

1420!

A definite cheers!

As I recall, 'J.R.R.' and Edith's little story is a lovely one. Makes one feel very optimistic, even if you weren't meaning to.

Hmm. Are you suggesting a sort of RPG anniversary party, Lal? Our BD birthday party RPGs are legion. Or is that legend? Well, any way....

Now wouldn't that have been a wonderful date choice for a BD-instigated wedding?

Holbytlass has just left Hobbiton.
Wow, Wednesday March 22nd, ooh, I love coincidences- my son (2) was born on that day and one of my daughters (9) was born today, March 25th.

A little late but "cheers" to the couple and an extra "cheer" to Edith for allowing her husband to write his stuff.
I can quite imagine alot of other wives, "would you stop with that rubbish-it's so juvenile"!

I have to disagree - I find it rather sad. Edith always seems to me to be such a sacrificial figure, representative of so many gifted women of earlier generations who had to give up any hope of any fulfilment beyond the domestic sphere on marriage. the fact that her enforced conversion prevented an appropriate amateur outlet for her talents is particularly cruel. Even the measured and authorised Carpenter biography, shows in Tolkien a hardness worthy of Thingol.

I do wonder if it is a factor in my extreme dislike of the story of Beren and Luthien?

It is enough (as soon as my lenten abstinece is over) to make me pop along to the Miramar (where Edith was happy and Tolkien less so ) and toast Edith and feminism...
