Frodo was not so curious to ask whose body shape Gollum took after. Gandalf did not want to admit to mothering Smeagol, so he convinced Frodo to pity him. After all, it isn't too hard to pity a creature whose father is a creepy, well manicured evil guy and whose mother is a large bearded wizard.
