I STRONGLY DISAGREE!!!!!!!!! In my opinion, there was at least one ring at Erebor before Smuag came. I think that this was the reason for the great wealth there and what in patr drew Smuag. And Gandalf says that the Seven Sauron has gathered to himself or the dragons consumed. The number of dragons to consume rings was very small in the 3rd age, so Smaug may even have swallowed a ring from somewhere else. Hey, dragons do live a long time. And once the dragons consume a ring, I believe they are like sharks; Their bellies are full of stuff they swallow. So smaug would have the power of the ring(s) he swallowed. Then, when Smuag died and sunk to the bottom of Long Lake, the dwarves eventually dove down and got their ring(s) back. Therefore the ring(s) would go to Gimli and it went with him when he left ME with Legolas.

"Good Morning!" said the dragon. "You seem surprised."
"Good Morning! said Farmer Giles. "I am that!"
