From archaic English riven dell, meaning a deeply cut valley
As said before Imladris and Karningul are two other names for Rivendell, the third name remains to be a mystery to me! the house of Elrond,The last homely house and the first homely house are probably incorrect ... cheers for anyone who can find the third!!!
