I was a astonished too! It is the ancient egyptians. For one thing the Faraos wore a high helmlike thingy very much alike to the crown of Gondor - just without the wings - And the Gondorians was very obsessed with tombs and they embalmed their Kings. Tolkien wrote this in a letter to a woman who asked, among other things, about the design of the crown of Gondor.
