It was the second time he went down the tunnel. Smaug was watching the mouth of the tunnel with one cracked eye. When Bilbo notices the gleam of the dragon's eye, he stepped back, afraid, then remembered that he was invisible and he "blessed the luck of his ring." Of course Smaug smelled Bilbo and felt the draft of his motions and respiration.
