My assumption has been that the 'relatives' rule is to account for 'they obviously met, because they're siblings/parent and child, but the book never says'.

Of course, opinions have differed... I've spent a bit of time looking at the early parts of this thread, and I definitely saw someone attempt to directly link Aragorn with Earendil.
