Looking for other uses of wings in simile was a clever angle to take-- I personally find it very convincing. 'Winged' for 'swift' is a common comparison in the classics, isn't it? Tolkien was immersed in them: classics, old english epics, just no modern novels. I had been meaning to seek out a thread on the great balrog wings controversy, which I have heard whispers about; that was a nice taste of it.
