I remember my dad reading them to me when I was about 7, and a friend of mine gave away significant portions of the plot. Read them quickly before someone else does that to you. I've since read the entire series several times. It makes wonderful out loud reading, especially after dinner. Only problem is, if everyone knows it really well, it can be silly, with adlibbing and inside jokes.
