I've had a lot of trouble trying to get into the Silmarillion.
I recently came up with a solution for me, though:
On my site I started a small project to summarise the book. Each chapter will be broken down into biographies of the characters, lists of places, and a summary of each story or section.
Once this is done, I should be able to use this simplified version to grasp the basics of the whole book put together.
