Interesting Question

It's been years since I've read the whole trilogy+ straight through. Every once in a while I'll browse through a chapter or two, especially recently with the movie coming out soon.

The Hobbit was the third real book that I ever read (after Tom Sawyer and White Fang) when I was about ten. It took me a whole summer in my off hours at camp to get through it - incidentally the same summer I learned how to play D&D. The two played off of each other quite well.

I tried reading the Lord of the Rings shortly thereafter, but I must admit it was hard going. I basically gave up around Helm's Deep six months later.

I took another shot at it when I was in High School and I absolutely loved it. Don't remember how long it took. I've probably read the whole series completely about half a dozen times.

The best was when I was in the Peace Corps. I was posted in a large town and had access to a large library of English print books. There was a month long period in which I was "between" jobs (I was a teacher and the teachers were on strike). I spent nearly the entire month hanging out in a hunting lodge on the edge of town that was popular with French tourists. It was like something out of a Bogart film. I easily read fifty books that month. One day when no one else was around I started reading at about 9 AM and blasted my way through the Hobbit, LOTR and about half of the Sil for good measure. The best part was that it was hippo migration season, so I enjoyed the periodic spectacle of herds of hippos floating down the Charay River. Not a bad way to pass a day.
