When I first read the book (over 30 years ago) I was tremendously impressed by Aragorn, for the reasons people have mentioned above. Proud, mysterious and very macho! The idea that he has been done out of his rightful inheritance and his determination to regain it makes him a very inspiring character. Having said that, I don't envisage him as being exactly the ideal companion down at the pub. Probably Gandalf would be much more interesting in the long run.
