If you refer back to the hobbit ,gandalf felt that it would be wiser to bring at least 15 dwarvs and a hobbit to get recover the jewels from smaug,a dragon but yet he tried to take on the balrog alone.Why would he be prepared to face a battle with a dragon alone? Maybe because it was too strong so he was aided by dwarves but yet the balrog,he just needed his staff.Maybe he knew he could overcome the balrog alone because it wasnt as strong, so he challenged it to battle.just a thought.
