That's a good guess, but not what I'm looking for. This person was specifically described using both adjectives.

It seems the answer to this question is in my head waiting to jump out. I almost recall the quote "And so he died: the last, who was greatest" or something like that. And unless I'm making it up or thinking of another book I'm going to kick myself if I can't find the answer.
