Even if PJ based those movies from the book, the book's FAR better...I mean the books has tickled the dullest part of my brain. My imagination's not very far from those at the movies, but then I don't know why I like the book better than the movies, apart from the reason that PJ chuckled out Bombadil and Glorfindel's parts... along with the Barrow Downs.
