I am female, as well. I think science fiction and fantasy in general are more enjoyed by males than females (though I know a lot of women who love sci fi, it's nowhere near the number of men I know)! I didn't have anyone bring me into the stories, either. I just didn't have a tv and was catching up on all the classic sci fi and fantasy I hadn't read. I got hooked after the Hobbits met Strider, but my favorite part is the Moria/Lorien sequence.
