Silmarien has just left Hobbiton.
Pipe

My Dad read me the Hobbit when I was somewhere between the ages of 8 and 12. It was great the only bad bit was when he would fall asleep and I'd give him a poke with my elbow then he'd read the line he'd already read and fall asleep again .
When we (finally)finished it we started tLotR. But I don't know what happened but we never got round to keeping going. So when I heard about the movies my first thought was COOL and my second was I should read the books ... so I did then I was so into them I read the Silmarillion. And LotR again ... and the Hobbit again...

So my answer I guess is I read the books first
