Note that at Cirith Ungol, Sam says to Frodo that putting on the IRng,once they had properly entered Mordor, would be a very bad idea - in fact, when he enters Mordor, he imddeiately sneses that the likelyhood of being caught by Sauron's will is immensely increased compared to when they were in Shelob's lair in the mountains.
