It's one of the parts of his writings that makes them so much more real then, say, Isaac Asimov's Foundation trilogy, which just doesn't have that "historic/mythic" feel to it. And what did the Took girls do that made them so remarkable? Imagine the mother/father debates of Bilbo's parents when he evinced his tookish adventurous side.
