Alloting 24 hours for both day and night with a fixed time for the transition would do very well. As for slowing the game down, patience is a virtue. I think we could sacrifice a bit of excitement to give everyone the chance to speak up. What's the point of having a lot of players if only a few 'loudmouths' can voice out their opinions or strategies? Besides, what was that about waiting expectantly for something making it sweeter once grasped?
