The twins part came from the original book which had a distinctly different sort of ending. And they were not the first twins in the book. Faliene was a twin, but Disney decided to leave her twin out of the movie because that plot line also had a sad ending.

Oh, and, just as a point of interest, the Disney movie is spelt Bambi.
