Unfortunately, Frodo didn't have to see the ring, he could smell it. And the demented, mouth foaming, Frodo went after Sam.

Fortunately Gollum climbed up from a ledge and tried to take the Ring but the Ring slipped out of his grasp and fell into the hot lava and was thus destroyed.

Unfortunately, Tolkien was unhappy with this and changed it to read
"Fortunately Gollum climbed up from a ledge and tried to take the Ring but the Ring slipped out of his grasp and fell onto Frodo's head".
