I remember Lieber's Conjure Wife-- about an arms race between ambitious academic wives, who take up witchcraft to advance their husband's careers by canceling out the curses and counter-curses of rival wives. 'You don't really think you got tenure because of your research, do you? I left a chicken-bone charm on the doorstep of the Dept. Head.'
