To me, being a fan means more than just liking something, whatever you happen to be talking about at the time. For me it means wanting to know more about the subject, or feeling passionate about the subject. In other words, you might enjoy a football team, but you wouldn't be considered a fan of that particular team unless you held beliefs about that team being different or unique in some way.
