Tolkien has never been my favorite poet, though if pressed I do like the Lament for Eorl the Young.

Epic lays and stories in verse have never been my cup of tea, and I have to admit to skipping thorough a lot of the verse while re-reading the trilogy.

Maybe it comes off better as spoken word.
