Yes, Tolkien said that the Numenoreans are like ancient egyptians. But I think they are very much like Romans too.

In their mightiest days, they both were truly the greatest might in the world(well, the Valar can't really be counted), but were eventually divided(Arnor/Gondor, East Rome/West Rome). West Rome eventually fell and was divided, as was Arnor, but Byzant and Gondor survived.

But the elves.. Njah, I don't think there's anything in our world that they could resemble. Well, maybe us Finns.. [img]smilies/tongue.gif[/img]
