Yes, there are some good background stories. The Fords of Isen tells how King Theoden's son Theodred gets killed, and also how the command structure of the Rohirrim was in somewhat of a disarray afterward, being the King was burduned by the sorceries of Sarumann.

Also another favorite of mine is 'Disaster at the Gladden Fields' where it tells in detail of Isildur and his loss of the battle, three of four sons, and the Ring, and his life.
