Could it be Helm? He died 260 years before Frodo and Sam looked in the Mirror of Galadriel, he lost his family, he froze to death, and cold is quite invincible.

You're so close! Really! But the "Mirror" but is not literal. Rather, it shows a duplicate of what happened. If that helps any.
