I agree with Thorongil; I think it's the book itself.

Three volumes;
One whole.

And if this is it, yep - it's pretty wicked.

I think that "The Lord of the Rings" could easily be right, but if not, I'll venture to guess that it is the War of Wrath, if only because there were three "divisions" of elves: Vanyar, Noldor, Teleri.
