Ah, c'mon it's not even that cyptic at all... Just think about it... You measure two distances. One is really easy cause I tell you where from where. The second one, you have to figure out the end points. Once you have those two numbers, multiply them together then divide by ten. That is the distance of a certain mountain range. Hint: The vegetarian (cartainly not a vegan) is in the Hobbit...

I'm going to guess the Ered Nimrais because

The distance between Amon Din and Halifirien = about 160 mi
Dwelling of a vegetarian = Bëorn's house
Yavanna's chosen one's house = Radagast's home Rhosgobel
Distance between the two = about 40 mi
160x40=6400
Length of Ered Nimrais = about 650 mi
650x10=6500

So there is about 100 mi difference.

Ah, good... you did it as the crow flies. I was afraid I wasn't clear enough on that bit. Very nice!

I want to get from the Grey Havens to Pelargir. Provided that I can only use roads and waterways, what is the shortest path that I can take?
I don't want the distance in miles, just tell me which rivers, roads, etc you would travel on.

Uh well, Gee...

You hop on a boat, head west out of the Gulf of Lune, follow the coast south and turn east after you past the Cape of Andrast, through the Bay of Belfalas then north past the island Tolfalas, up the Mouths of Anduin and into Pelargir.

There's a shorter way.

On land perhaps?

OK you march cross country to to Tower Hills where you pick up the Great East Road at the Undertowers. Then head east passing Greenholm and Michel Delving where you turn off toward Sarn Ford. This road merges with the Greenway which takes you to Tharbad where it changes its name to the Old South Road. Take this to the Fords of Isen in the Gap of Rohan and pass by Edoras. Somehow the name changes again to the Great West Road. Follow it along the Ered Nimrais and the Beacons of Gondor in Anorien until you reach Minas Tirith. Continue in the direction of the River Erui where the road acquires another alias: South Road. Behold, you are in Pelargir. Perhaps it's shorter, but its so much more complicated than the sea route.

Then of course the absolute shortest way is to call up Gwaihir & Co. and ask for a lift...
