Then Sauron was for that time vanquished, and he forsook his body, and his spirit fled far away and hid in waste places; and he took no visible shape again for many long years

Sauron had no body, and yet he remained undefeated for One Age. Of course, one could say that the Ring had to do with his power being undiminished, but to say that a Maia without body is 'omni-potent' is pretty true to mortals like myself.
