I had always thought Frodo's face a cypher, too, despite all the lovely drawings of him by various artists. My favorite depictions of him being John Howe and Ted Nasmith, but as said in a previous post, even these images are ephemeral and don't quite stick.
For me,it's easier to 'see' the other characters because they are separate from me - heroes, villains, youngsters, lords and ladies, etc, grand figures in a grand story. But Frodo is, in a way, the ordinary person confronted by a great challenge,who rises to it in an admirable way. He is the possibility, to me, of my own ability to do such. In a sense, I look out from his eyes when I read the story, & in that respect it's hard to see one's own face.
