It was a just a matter of what he could fit in. As much as Jackson says he would make the cinematice versions of the films as long as he wanted, I'm sure he realised that to do anything over 3 1/2 hours at the cinema would be madness. This is the ONLY problem I have with the film i.e. the ending was too rushed. That is why the EE versions are the definitive versions of the movies, and I bet Jackson will admit to this once he's got the Best Film/Director Oscars in his hands.
