I saw it for a second time and if you are paying attention it is quite clear that Gandalf's only reason for going near Denethor was to protect Pippin. Now I'm sure this will only spark a new debate over why Denethor would be beating on Pip but oh well. It is quite clear that Gandalf does not intentionally <I>push</I> Denethor into his pyre.
