When Smeagol says "We hates hobbitses, we wants to see them...dead," it seems to me that Smeagol really doesn't want to kill them, but doesn't want Gollum to think he's a wimp. Gollum is like the evil parent ordering the little kid to do these things, and poor Smeagol has no choice.
