In the Book, I believe that he had physical form throughout, albeit that he was never seen, so he did not need the Ring to acheive this.<P>If it's true, I actually think that Sauron appearing on the battlefield himself at the Black Gate could work well, provided it's done properly. My only concern is that it will overshadow the Mouth of Sauron, and possibly diminish his role.
