The only real problem with making the Silm into movies/TV series is that its not as well known as LotR. Complex storylines aside, fewer people would go to see it simply cuz they dont know what the heck it is. And I would hate to see a book as great as the Silm messed up. As for the characters, Beren should should play Beren. Just cuz it would be right. Maedhros could be whoever played Elladan in FotR. Maybe Claire Danes for Luthien? And for some truly strange reason, I picture Beleg Cuthalion looking like Legolas. I dont know why, or where that mental image came from. So, Orlando Bloom all the way.
