Question What is with the silent Elf???

I mean...Realy!! He could at least say INTELIGENT stuff!! His vocabulary in the movie consists of nods, shakes, and the occational speech on how Aragorn is the king.....Just another pretty boy!! His father would be rolling in his grave if he was dead!!!

Come on! Crebain from Dunland? Not too shabby an example of knowledge, even Gandalf didn't realise that one before ol' Legolas.

But wasn't the "Crebain from Dunland" line actually Aragorn's in the book? I seem to recall on the Extended DVD Orlando Bloom talking about how he argued that he should get to say it...
-Lily

quote:
Aye, aye it's a Balrog!?

Well, you've completely changed my view on that line now, HC. Formerly I had a vision (courtesy of another post on this site) of Legolas running round in circles waving his hands in the air and screaming "Ai! Ai!".
Now, thanks to you, all I can see is a gruff nothern Legolas from Yorkshire saying "Ey up, t'Balrog's come" (perhaps following it up with "Put t'kettle on mother").

Nice One, Saucepan Man
I saw Sean Bean on a chat show just after FotR came out and he delivered a few of the lines in his *usual* accent, the best one (that I can't get out of my mind when I watch the dvd) is:
"Aye oop Frodo. Ast tha got t'ring then?"

Wow you are new to this! I haven't been on that long either but I know who not to insult. In case you can't tell I'm running to Legolas' defence. I think he was portrayed wonderfully in the movie, and the whole silent thing, is his character. I mean after all, he is over 2000 years old, he's learned when it is nececary to speak and when it is not, he's also very wise as Elves go so there is rarely need for questions from him. Get it

"It's Crebain from Dunland!"
To me, it's like a little kid looking at the sky and going "It's an airplane, from the airport!" None too intelligent.

Awww... everyone are so mean to poor old Legolas. I almost feel sorry for him, almost
No, but really, he isn't that silent. I mean, Aragorn is just as silent (well almost) in FotR.
AND elves are supposed to be a little bit quiet, sort of, beyond this world...

At least they did not have him say it as many would say it over here, in New York. I just had this image of Legolas in a baggy tunic, with a bandana in his hair, lots of mithril chains, and his tights down so as to show at least four inches of boxer shorts with a tie as a belt saying, "Yo! Dawgs! 'S a BALrog, man! Dun worry! I'll pop a cap in his tail!" That is cleaned up to make it chat appropriate, of course.
I think that the silent petrified act made him seem wiser in the movie, instead of running around shrieking like a girl, or doing what I imagined up there.

No question but Legolas is an Elf of few words in FotR, maybe he's shy?
I've often wondered what Orlando Bloom said when he saw the script. On the other hand though Legolas has few lines he does get a lot of action, I guess it evens out.

Welcome to the Barrowdowns, Himhithiel! Come check out the RP section...
Oh, the accents, the accents...
quote:
"Ey up, t'Balrog's come" (perhaps following it up with "Put t'kettle on mother"

Strives desperately to keep a straugth face...before failing miserably, and collapsing onto the floor. And as for
quote:
"Aww, shucks! The balrog brought us flowers!"

Now, has anyone watched Men In Black recently? When it has that picture of K giving "that tall man" aka the alien, flowers? 'Cos ive just got this image in my head of that same thing, but with Legolas and the Balrog....
*sigh*

quote:
But wasn't the "Crebain from Dunland" line actually Aragorn's in the book?

Yes, but that wasnt the only line switched around from the film and the book. And hey, maybe it was switched around in an attempt to make him seem more intelligent!
In the book, Legolas wasnt very, well, notable. He was just...there. I mean, the entire description of him is
quote:
There was also a strange elf clad in green and brown, Legolas, a messenger from his father, Thranduil, the King of the elves in Northern Mirkwood

Doesnt really tell us all that much about Legolas anyway.
And yes, I did just type all of that out. If anyone knows of a site where it has LotR ready typed out, that would really help me.
Anyway, there are entirely silent elves in FotR, arent there? Such as the illustrious Figwit...didnt say a word, I cant even remember what Figwit stands for, but he has his own fan club and all...
