If you wait on reading a book(I could understand FOTR, but not TTT, ROTK) just so you don't ruin the experience of seeing the film isn't what I would do. No matter how much I tell myself that the movies are adaptations, I know I will end up being disappointed somehow if I have a set story in my head. So I guess to elaborate on what I said about two experiences, I think the order you do the two effects how much you can successfully enjoy the two separately.
