In no way do you see him as the outstanding hobbit he is. In the books you actually feel he is the only one who could possibly accomplish the destruction of the Ring. Beginning with the Weathertop scene, the changes made in the character change Frodo from Tolkien's vision. I believe this will really hurt the end of the story when we hopefully see the other hobbits coming to the forefront back in the Shire after the ring is destroyed.
