That is one of my favorite parts of the story. Just him going by, and thinking that the hobbits out in the country was odd. It really had nothing to do (in my opinion) with the main storyline, but it was just nice. I also love the quote about Theoden from Pippin. After all the serious things that are going on in the book, that just seems to be there to remind you that you can take the hobbit of of the Shire, but you can never take the Shire out of the hobbit

I additionally think that the counting game that Gimli and Legolas plays is another enjoyable thing, that is just like icing on the cake. It adds some humor to the story, but then it doesn't distract from it.
