and even saruman was kind of a slave of sauron, however unbeknowst of by himself. he was tricked and steered through the palantir, and believed he was an ally but sauron rather used him to distract the rohirrim from Gondor. when he wouldn't have any need of saruman any longer, he would have just destroyed him. (or he would make him into something like the mouth, a creature, once proud, that has now become a mindless extension of the dark lord himself)
