I eventually found the answer, but not until after he had left on the &quot;sabbatical&quot; from which he recently returned. That quote makes me picture Beren as a character in some kind of Rankin/Bass animated special, with birds on his shoulders and deer, squirrels, and bunnies hopping along behind him.
