I think you're thinking of this a little like a D&D game. We want to create a plausible storyline with few wasted or unecessary elements. Each element introduced should have some purpose, weather in "play-by-play" or "color."
In other words, throttle back a little, and don't be in a hurry for fantastic jewels and great treasures or rememberances. We are building a story. Characterization is important. But let's show it in actions. I think the Dwarf would keep the brooch as a remembrance. And then, should you meet this Ranger, you might make a nice little scene...
