Actually, I did see a hobbit once.

I was in a highrise office building, coming down the elevator when I glanced through a crowd of people... and there was this young fellow, chipper, could not have been more than 4' 9" tall, conservatively dressed and well-mannered, with neatly combed hair. I was right behind him on the escalator wondering why he plucked at some memory. I realized: he's a hobbit. I'll be darned.

So now I've seen one, I can die happy.
