I tried this with handcuffs. If this is your hand:
|||| |||| | \|||/ Then cutting off the thumb would only give you: |||| |||| \|||/ You'd still have that ridge of bone in the way, unless you just ripped out the base of the thumb too like tearing off a drumstick.
